Is your life an illusion?   Leave a comment

As you have noticed, the pictures below seem to move as you move forward and focus your eyes on a particular area. Is not it astounding how our senses can so much disagree with our intellect? Knowledge tells you that this picture is not moving but when your brain interprets the image received by your eyes you become doubtful. Often in life, we have the impression that what we are saying, hearing or doing is right. Unless we are told that this is not the case, we won’t take the initiative to think otherwise. Our trend of life, our habits and peers project to us an environment that perfectly seems to be real and make sense. As a lecturer often said, “Unfortunately, common sense is the least common amongst people”. How often do we take the time to stop and see if what we are doing is right? Are we following the flow blindly? It takes guts and courage to dare questioning a long established practice/culture. For example why do people say Bless you when someone sneezes? I know a store keeper who don’t sell needles after 6pm, another guy who spits when he sees a black cat. Superstition? I know an old guy who used to worship a saint and was then deceived when he learnt that this saint never existed…The list could go long.

How often do we take for granted what the media say? Do we take the time to verify if what experts are saying are true? With such a large pool of information around it is becoming more difficult to trust these so called facts. We can try millions of solutions and still find ourselves doubtful that we reached the best solution. Every year new technologies are making other technologies obsolete. But were not promoters of these technologies convinced that their products were among the best on the market? It was just for a while. It certainly took time for them to realise that their technology was no longer relevant to the consumers. To all perfection there is a limit. We cannot put a period after a new invention, someone else will come with something new and propose an alternative. New records are broken in Olympic games, we are deceiving ourselves if we think that we reached the apogee. An illusion is the distortion of the reality.

There’s this story where the captain of a battleship sent a signal to a small body found several miles ahead. The captain said “I’m the captain of battleship and I’m in a hurry. You gotta move or I’ll mercilessly destroy you”.

The body replied with it’s small signaling light “You move! I’m not gonna move”. The captain was offended by this reply and sent another message “Before I destroy you, tell me who you are”. The body replied, I’m a lighthouse and if you continue this way it’s you who’s gonna be destroyed.”

We might be so convinced about something that we are heading towards total ruin. But wisdom calls out to seek for advice.

I found out that there’re some words of wisdom that we can put a period to them. These words of wisdom stood the test of time, they never become obsolete and always proved to be relevant to man’s problem for ages. Even if there’re millions of arguments against these words of wisdom, these millions of arguments eventually fail. Our senses can fail us, people’s attitude can change, laws can fail, experts can be benumb and classify as “mysteries” things they can’t explain.

God’s words says “To all perfection I see a limit, but your commands are boundless.” Ps 119:96

Nothing will ever prove to be wiser than what God said.

The very essence of your words is truth; all your just regulations will stand forever.” Ps 119:160
God’s word has as foundation absolute truth and what God said will remain true and valid forever.

If God said that a lie is a sin, He won’t change His mind. If God promised something, we should consider it as done! God does not owe anyone. God’s word is not an illusion. It’s a matter of life and death.

Psalm 119:

Your eternal word, O Lord,
stands firm in heaven.
90 Your faithfulness extends to every generation,
as enduring as the earth you created.
91 Your regulations remain true to this day,
for everything serves your plans.
92 If your instructions hadn’t sustained me with joy,
I would have died in my misery.

93 I will never forget your commandments,
for by them you give me life.

94 I am yours; rescue me!
For I have worked hard at obeying your commandments.
95 Though the wicked hide along the way to kill me,
I will quietly keep my mind on your laws.
96 Even perfection has its limits,
but your commands have no limit.
