Failures   2 comments

Never Give up

Never Give up

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
Thomas A. Edison

Thomas Edison tried again and again to find the proper combination for his inventions. The way he interpreted his failures made him more experienced. One good thing about failure is that you know through experience why/how/when you should not do something. Failure makes you become humble and request for help and support.

Suppose that I play darts for the first time with another beginner. Let’s say that I ignore that my opponent’s height is by luck perpendicular to the bull’s eye and that he always throws with the same strength and hits it. Let’s say that I have not been able to hit the red dot even once. I would be frustrated, it would be total failure…

Let’s say that this scenario above occurs 10 times. I’m quite certain that I’ll gain experience, I’ll know what angle I should throw my darts and adapt to the situation. Little by little I’ll be able to get closer to the bull’s eye.

Now what will happen if my opponent and I move a step backward? My opponent will always miss the red dot if he keeps throwing as he did before. But since I failed before and gained experience, I’ll be able to adapt to this new situation quicker and win.

Some people succeed just by luck or because they have all the ingredients around them to make them succeed. Other people have to toil hard to get these ingredients. The good thing with those who toil hard is that they know through experience where to look for what they need and where not to(failure). Those who are provided everything and succeed think they are so perfect. But remove these crutches and see whether they stand firm!

Failure makes you more mature, strengthens the muscles of perseverance in you, it destroys your ego and sharpens your skills. Look at your failures, you must have learned from them.

P.s. It’s also not what people say about you that makes you great/dull. It’s what God thinks of you which matters! So when your problem is eating you up, you gotta grab it by the neck and never give up! May God be with you 🙂

Epistle to the Hebrews (2:1-4)   2 comments

Epistle to the Hebrews

Epistle to the Hebrews

So we must pay more careful attention to what we have heard. Then we will not drift away from it. Even the message God spoke through angels had to be obeyed. Every time people broke the Law, they were punished. Every time they didn’t obey, they were punished. Then how will we escape if we don’t pay attention to God’s great salvation? The Lord first announced that salvation. Those who heard him gave us the message about it. God gave witness to it through signs and wonders. He gave witness through different kinds of miracles. He also gave witness through the gifts of the Holy Spirit. He gave them out as it pleased him.” Hebrews 2:1-4

In chapter 1, we saw the supremacy and divinity of Christ. In this chapter, the author focuses more on Jesus’ humanity.

So we must pay more careful attention to what we have heard“. Our author also appeal to take heed in Hebrews 12 because of the danger of negligence.

For the reasons mentioned in Hebrews 1, we must pay more attention to what we know about Jesus.

Some of the reasons are that:

God spoke through His Son. Jesus is greater than the well respected Moses and prophets. This Jesus is God and sits on God’s throne. Angels worship and serve Him.

Before His ascension, the disciples adored Him because they knew He was God (Luke 24:52). Doubting Thomas finally acknowledged that this Jesus he knew in the flesh was indeed God Almighty. He confessed “My Lord and my God!”.

There can be only 2 answers to who Jesus was. Either He was God or not. If He is really God then we must pay more attention to what He said and did. Ignoring Him is hell.

These Jews were probably backsliding due to their lack of consideration to whom Jesus was really. Were they trying to return to their former way of life and Jewish traditions? The author made it clear that Jesus cannot be compared to the Jewish ancestors. So let’s focus our attention on who Jesus is and we’ll not underestimate His greatness and supremacy.

These Jews heard what Jesus taught. The author does not want them to forget these because there will be consequences to it.

If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. Those who hate me hate my Father also. “I did miracles among them that no one else did. If I hadn’t, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen those miracles. And still they have hated both me and my Father.” (John 15:22-24)

The number of miracles which happened in the OT added together will not be able to exceed the number of miracles which Jesus did during His 3 years of ministry. Jesus’ disciples did even more miracles.

If someone knows the truth and does not care about it, he’ll be judged more severely. If God faithfully accomplished what He warned through angels, it is certainty that He’ll accomplish what He said through His Son. Not only that, Jesus sent His apostles to testify about Him. The pouring out of the Spirit and miracles performed gave enough evidence that Jesus was superior. There’re many reasons why “we must pay more careful attention to what we have heard“. We saw some reasons earlier and the author has even more to say in the coming chapters.

Epistle to the Hebrews (1:13-14)   Leave a comment

Epistle to the Hebrews

Epistle to the Hebrews

To which of the angels did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? ” Hebrews 1:13-14

“Sit at my right hand”:
Again the author says that God never said to an angel to sit at His right hand. His right hand? We saw earlier in Revelation 3: 21 :

To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.

Jesus is inferring that He has a throne an that He also sits on the throne of His Father. So there’s only one throne for one God in heaven. This throne should not be considered as a physical seat but as a place of honor. So sitting at the right is a matter honor and not a matter of seat position. So Jesus sits in the place of honor as His Father does.

until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet“:

Jesus asked this question to the Pharisees:

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’ If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. ” Matthew 22:41-45

This is a very strong evidence of Jesus’ superiority. This verse quoted from Psalm 110 is saying that Jesus is descendant of David but yet He is the Lord of David. Speaking by the Spirit David is saying that the Lord of heaven is saying to Jesus to “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet”. In this same Psalm, David describes this Lord as being similar to Melchisedek and that the Lord is at the right hand of this Lord (the Messiah). This is a great prophetic Psalm which when read before Jesus’ coming could not make sense to the Pharisees or even David. Jesus will reign over His enemies.

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation

If the God of heaven came down on this earth, humbled himself by taking a body, was afflicted and died a tragic death on a cross, then there must be a tragic reason for Him to go to this extent. What can God gain from sinners like us? What could be so important for Him to push Him taking such a drastic decision? In His foreknowledge, God planned His coming before man’s fall. The world history was shaped “to Make straight the way for the Lord” as John the Baptist did. The reason was Love God said in John 3:16. He so loved the world that He had to do all this. Salvation for man is therefore very important to God.

After the mighty and perfect work of His Son Jesus, God even sends His angels to serve those who will inherit salvation. The angels delivered Peter from prison so that He could continue preaching and the Spirit confirmed (Hebrews 2:4, Acts 14:3) what the apostles preached through miracles. Making this salvation known to humans is not just the Christian’s job, angels are also involved in it. Undoubtedly, this must be a “so great salvation” (Hebrews 2:2).

Epistle to the Hebrews

Epistle to the Hebrews

He also says,“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain;they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” .” (Hebrews 1:10-12)

God again speaks to the Son and declares that this Son is the Creator.
The author is now reinforcing his arguments by iterating the Son’s work in the creation (as mentioned in v2).

Is not it the Son who told Job :

Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. Who determined its dimensions and stretched out the surveying line? What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone” Job 38

On Judgement day, the earth and heavens will flee before Him. It’s difficult to imagine how spectacular this will be! Ah how limited is my human mind to comprehend His Greatness! Before the Son of God,this big earth is just a speck of dust which is looking for a place to hide! Yet this speck of dust is the work of His hands.

And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books.” Revelation 20:11

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God,and the Word was God.He existed in the beginning with God.God created everything through him,and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.”

His Kingdom endures forever and does not decay because righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. God the One and only does not change. He is faithful, righteous and perfect. Only Him can be trusted 100%. My soul and mind cannot trust any mortal being with such assurance. But this Son of God deserves my trust. I’m convinced that what He asks me to do is the best and only thing to do. I love and trust His counsels. Man has weaknesses and are imperfect but not Him. With time people change attitude and convictions but not Jesus Christ.

His years never end because He is existence. For in Him we live, move and have our being (Acts 17:28). We live by time but not God. When a new heaven will be made, time will cease to exist because eternity cannot be measured.

Why writing?   Leave a comment

Writing for pleasure

Writing for pleasure

We write to pass on information. Without this tool of communication, we would have still been ignorant and barbarous. Writings can be preserved longer and reproduced identically as its original. Oral transfer of knowledge is often plagued by self interpretation thus making it unreliable to carry precised information. But oral communication has also some attributes which writings cannot express well, it shows tonality, hesitance to answer, assurance, sadness, happiness and other human expressions. Nowadays, with videos, oral communication is able to have the same precision as writing.

My goal here is not to argue which is the best way of communication.

Many people speak before thinking and say things they regret after. But when you write, you are less likely to do the same mistakes. You have the time to reread if what you’re saying makes sense.
You can enjoy writing even if no one will read what you have to say. You write for pleasure. But it will not make sense to speak if there’re no listeners.

When I was in college, I did not enjoy writing because I was forced to write on things I did not like to pass exams.
Examiners judge students on what they write and not on who they are and how they look. But when you speak, it’s inevitable that people judge you on who you are and how you look.

Writing has a close brother called reading. If you like writing then you must love reading. If you don’t read what others have to say, you’ll not acquire knowledge and people won’t care about what you have to say.

If you’re a writer, you are very attentive to the words used by another writer. You can read between lines. A comma, full stop or word means more to you than an ordinary reader. Because you’re also a writer, you are more attentive to details. You try to think why the writer used this phrase structure/word and not something else.

When you write, you can have a co-author and mix up your ideas and style of writing. Both styles can be mixed to make a superior style. How can you do that with speaking? With oral communication, 2 people cannot speak at the same time. But with writing you can.

It is also easier to correct what you write than correcting what you say.

If you’re a writer, you have an idea of what kind of writer I am. You know my personality, what interests me, where I’m weak and what annoys me. Is not it? Writing can help you express yourself and communicate your ideas even if you do not like to talk a lot. So why not sharpening your skills?
