Sarah laughs

Sarah laughs

For years she must have been anguished, wept and felt bad when she saw her friends with children. She was probably looked down and stigmatized by the society. She was around 75 and she blamed God for making her barren (Genesis 16:2,15, Gen 17:1) and finally gave up. Most probably because of her love for her husband she thought it best to give him a posterity through another woman. She probably thought she was a failure and that she was depriving her good husband of descendants. Her husband was promised a large posterity by God but was not yet a father. Was not her husband also feeling sad? Or perhaps it was her fault. So she took the initiative of finding a remedy to this situation. It must have been hard to tell another woman to sleep with her beloved husband. After some time, her husband became a father but she was not the mother of that child Ismael. Perhaps she thought that she took the right decision and was able to fulfill God’s promise to Abraham. She saw her servant in his husband’s arms (Genesis 16:5) and suffered because this servant was looking down on her.

It was about after 14 years that Abraham became a father through Agar(Genesis 16:15):

God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, do not call her Sarai anymore. Her name will be Sarah. I will give her my blessing. You can be sure that I will give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations. Kings of nations will come from her.”Abraham fell with his face to the ground. He laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man who is 100 years old? Will Sarah have a child at the age of 90?”Abraham said to God, “I wish Ishmael could receive your blessing!” Genesis 17:15-18

Abraham laughed at what God said. He laughed because it did not make sense. His old wife Sarah would be pregnant after all these years? Why not blessing and establishing your covenant with Ishmael God? Does not that make more sense? Is not Ishmael Abraham’s firstborn? It seemed to Abraham that God was not understanding the situation.

The 3 visitors came and it was again about the pregnancy of his wife Sarah. “Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked. Sarah was no longer a young woman, she no longer had this desire to have a child. When she heard this conversation, Sarah probably said “Don’t you see it’s too late Lord?” and laughed. (Genesis 18:10-12)

Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Will I really have a baby, now that I am old?‘Is anything too hard for me? I will return to you at the appointed time next year. Sarah will have a son.” Sarah was afraid. So she lied and said, “I didn’t laugh.”But the Lord said, “Yes, you did.” Genesis 18:13-15

Why did Sarah laugh? Who would not have laughed? Did not God understand this situation? God knew well what was going on but had His plan. The Lord knew how long Sarah was suffering and came specially for her. We can laugh at many things people say but when God say something, it will happen no matter how impossible it is. God does not joke.

In the french bible it says “Y a-t-il rien qui soit étonnant de la part de l’Éternel?” which means “Is there anything which is not surprising from the Lord”
