Epistle to the Hebrews (7:25-28)   1 comment

Epistle to the Hebrews

He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven.Unlike those other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices every day. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he offered himself as the sacrifice for the people’s sins. The law appointed high priests who were limited by human weakness. But after the law was given, God appointed his Son with an oath, and his Son has been made the perfect High Priest forever.” Hebrews 7:25-28

The difference between the priesthood of Jesus and those who preceded Him is clearly portrayed. Jesus is holy, blameless and unstained by sin.  He does not need to offer sacrifice for His own sins before presenting Himself to God to intercede for us.He has the credentials, authority and credibility when He intercedes in our favor when the devil accuses us day and night before God’s throne(Rev 12:9). If it was Aaron our high priest, the devil could have discredited him by saying “Were not you the one who made the golden calf?”

This Jesus is God and is unstained by sin. He is Himself the judge because He is God and also an advocate because He is the perfect man who can plead for us.

In judiciary, one may hire a lawyer to defend him without the guarantee that the advocate will make his best to get him out. The advocate can be dishonest by requiring more money, have bad intentions and not defend well his client. The jury might have a bad opinion of the advocate due to his personal messy life. The advocate is just a man who sin and is imperfect.

Jesus understands us perfectly. He defends us because He is convinced of our innocence. He is convinced of our innocence because it happens that He is also a witness in this trial. His scars on his hands and feet are evidence that we are no longer guilty. The charge laid against you and me are removed because He paid the ransom. God Almighty, the Judge, considers this Advocate as the “One exalted above heaven”. This advocate has credibility. This advocate owns this case, it is as if this trial is against Him,  He is very concern, He is honest, He does not require money from us, He perfectly knows our faults and have the arguments to defend us. He wants all men to be saved and case by case He will stand as advocate and defend with vehemence those who trust in Him.

God in His righteousness Has determined beforehand that sinners should go to hell. He has not changed His mind and will not change His mind. When the devil accuses sinners of their sins, God cannot go against this order He established and He has to judge these sinners as predetermined. God would be unjust and unrighteous if He did not punish sins.

This said, that means we are all destined to hell because we are all sinners. God Almighty has to judge sins and because of that He poured out His wrath on Jesus instead of us. Jesus voluntarily offered Himself for us(John 10:18).

Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins.He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.We have left God’s paths to follow our own.Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief.Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants…for many to be counted righteous…for he will bear all their sin…because he exposed himself to death. He was counted among the rebels. He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels.” Isaiah 53

Could anyone come and propose to pay the ransom for our sins? We cannot bargain with God. If  you have been giving food to the poor all of your life and it happens that one day you murdered someone, you will never be able to tell to the judge “Look at all the good stuff I did”. There’s no such thing as a balance between right and wrong. Your good deeds do not cancel bad deeds, it’s an illusion. Man believes that he can repair bad things with good things, but it’s just an illusion. Where there’s grace, there’s no need of penitence.

There’s not even a righteous man who could dare to ask God to spare us from His judgement. But He, Jesus, knew that we were all damned like the fallen angels. We would have also been precipitated to hell like the angels who disobeyed God. No one could have saved us from the wrath of God. No one in heaven and earth was worthy and is worthy to even open the scrolls of God’s judgement. But Jesus spared us.

John said in Revelation 5:

And I saw a strong angel, who shouted with a loud voice: “Who is worthy to break the seals on this scroll and open it?”But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll and read it.Then I began to weep bitterly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll and read it. But one of the twenty-four elders said to me, “Stop weeping! Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals.”Then I saw a Lamb that looked as if it had been slaughtered, but it was now standing between the throne and the four living beings and among the twenty-four elders… He stepped forward and took the scroll from the right hand of the one sitting on the throne. And when he took the scroll, the four living beings and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb…“You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals and open it. For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. And you have caused them to become a Kingdom of priests for our God. And they will reign on the earth.”

Jesus is the perfect Advocate and High Priest. Jesus is the only One who can spare us from God’s wrath. Only Him has the credentials to defend our case.

I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me” John 14:6

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” 1 John 2:1,2
