Epistle to the Hebrews (10:19-22)   Leave a comment

Epistle to the HebrewsAnd so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.” Hebrews 10:19-22

We have seen earlier why we can enter boldly into heaven’s Most Holy Place. The reason given here is because of the superior sacrifice. It’s the holy, undefiled blood of the Lamb of God. We need to understand well that standing in God’s presence is a fearful thing. Queen Esther’s life was at stake when she entered the king’s presence. What a fearful moment that will be when we will all face Judgment?

On judgement day the earth and sky will flee in the presence of the one sitting on the great white throne. Everything that has been corrupted, that is degrading and temporary will be destroyed and set place to what is imperishable and eternal. Heaven and earth will pass (Luke 21:33). This God we are talking about is not confined to a holy place. We are talking here of an almighty God who hates sins and whose wrath since creation has been reserved for judgement day. Let us get this right that even angels hide their faces and feet in front of God’s holiness (Is. 6:2). Day and night, the 4 mighty living creatures in heaven never stop saying “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” Rev 4:6

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare” 2 Pet 3:10

And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide.” Rev 20:11

Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war.His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself. He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God.The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses. From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress. On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.” Rev 19:11-16
With all these facts presented to us, we have in face a God who cannot be described in terms of holiness, might and righteousness. How then can we dare to enter boldly in the Most Holy place? Only by the blood of Jesus? Oh yeah, only by it. This is the blood of redemption. It is the blood of Jesus which speaks favorably for us and does not cry out for vengeance. But woe to those who treated as unholy the blood of Jesus and rejected the Son!

You have come to Jesus, the one who mediates the new covenant between God and people, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks of forgiveness instead of crying out for vengeance like the blood of Abel.” Hebrews 12:24

Jesus’ sacrifice did not only forgive our sins but it made man closer to God than when they were created. Bring me on the Everest and my heart will pant and suffocate due to its exceptional height! But now to go stand in God’s presence? Among all the holy angels and holy men I would have considered it a grace to be in heaven and just have a corner to rest my soul. But now the scripture is telling you and I to go boldly in God’s presence! Woe to sinners when they will face the Holy Judge and Lord of Heaven! Even if I know Jesus, I still fear to get close to His Majesty. If earth and sky fled, how much more should I flee away from this God who is so holy and mighty!

But no, Jesus is asking us to enter the Most Holy Place, not even the holy place. He is the One who rules in heaven and He is inviting us in His dwelling place. How unworthy we are! Not only that, He prepared a place(John 17) and a great feast for us (Rev 19:9).

And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it,for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.” Mat 26:27

When we will meet our Lord in heaven and sit at His table, we will then realise the true meaning of grace. Our Lord has opened a new mode of living for us and removed all the barriers you can imagine. He tore the veil and want us to literally dwell in His Holy presence.

Paul said: “Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence” Eph 3:12

Our author wants to encourage people like you and I to “go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him“. Our conscience has been cleansed by the blood of the Lamb so that we can stand in God’s presence. God’s wrath on us is no longer present. Do not look at the angels who hide their faces in front of the Almighty God but look at Jesus, the High Priest. He is your brother, your friend and Advocate.

“For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water”

Our High Priest rules in heaven and there is not anyone who can accuse us. What a blessed hope that Jesus knows us all by our name! He wants each one of us to have fellowship with Him.

Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!” Rom 11:33
