Epistle to the Hebrews

Epistle to the Hebrews

How much more do I need to say? It would take too long to recount the stories of the faith of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and all the prophets.” Hebrews 11:32

Before going through the other figures quoted from the old testament, we need to comprehend why the author insists on the necessity of faith.

  • How much more do I need to say?

Our author would like to argue furthermore about the importance of faith but we see again that he does not have time to take name by name and extrapolate. We need to understand well that having faith in God is not a new doctrine of the new covenant. Being saved through faith and living by faith have largely been explained by Paul in his epistles(Eph. 2:8). Salvation by God’s grace through faith in the New testament is a central doctrine in Christianity which caused massive revivals and reformations in different era. Those people under the old covenant were justified by their faith in God though they had not Christ in their times. Christ is now the ultimate symbol of faith. Jesus said:

I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me“. John 14:6

I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.” John 11:25

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.“There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.” John 3:16-18

These statements of Jesus clearly show that He is the One onto whom man should have faith. He is the image of the invisible God who looked for faith in the people of the old covenant. God has publicly declared that everything is centered on the Son. The Son holds salvation, wrath and judgement in His hands.

There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

There’s no one in the whole bible who taught more about faith than Jesus (Mark 11:22). Do you understand that the reason you live now is only for Christ? It is Christ who teaches you on this road of faith. You need to live by faith in the Son of God as Paul said:

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Gal 2:20

When you’ll go through trials, it is the Son working in you to form and test your faith. Do not reason in your mind that God wanted to test only the faith of the figures of the old testament. This also applies to you no matter who you are. We all need to go to the lifelong school of faith. When we lack discernment, we murmur like the Israelites who failed to realise that God was testing their faith. We rebel against our leaders because we do not have the eyes of faith. We will need to give an account to God for our lack of faith. This is a sin that we often try to justify because we fear to put at risk our comfort.

My own eyes have seen how poor people have greater faith than those who are rich. I know an old poor woman who has 3 kids and who daily prays for God to provide for food and clothes for her family. Her husband abandoned her, she does not work and her only provider is the Father in heaven. This woman does not know how to read or write. She does not know much about the bible but she knows her God. She cannot teach french or english but she is qualified to teach about faith. She saw God intervened in impossible situations. She is a woman who prays and trust her God. In God’s eyes I know her reward will be greater than me because of her faith. Let the theologians sit down and listen to this woman of faith. I’m just amazed at her faith and feel so unworthy to try to encourage her in her daily trials.

Being saved through faith in the Son of God is the means to receive salvation. But living by faith in the Son of God is the evidence of our obedience to Christ. Do you face trials? If not then it’s probably truancy from the school of faith. Still we should discern God-given trials and other problems. How to discern? If the trial makes appeal to our faith and brings us closer to God then it is probably a God-given trial to form our faith.

The author of our epistle could cite more figures of the old testament to reinforce his arguments but if we just applaud these people and do not find it necessary to take ourselves this road of faith, then we need to question where our heart is. No matter how rich and intelligent you are, you need to humble yourself and go to the school of faith. May we submit to the Holy Spirit and obey where He wants to lead us.
