The Faith of a Centurion   Leave a comment

Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed” Mat. 8:8

He spoke and the sick were healed by His Words

This Roman officer had a sick servant for whom he cared. He probably heard the miracles did and he came to Jesus with an attitude of humility, faith and conviction. He was sure that Jesus could heal his servant. He positioned himself as someone who was subjected to a superior authority and obeyed its orders. He also placed himself as one who had authority and whose orders were obeyed.  He wanted to elevate Jesus by comparison. This man excelled even more in his faith when he refused to have Jesus make a physical displacement to perform the healing. Jesus was amazed by such a faith. You do not need to move to make that healing, I believe that if you just order the healing it will happen. Jesus had to be physically present when Lazarus was risen, when the lepers were healed or the blinds regained their sights.

Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. Be healed! And instantly the leprosy disappeared.” Luke 5:13

This miracle was in essence unique. It transcended the physical presence of Jesus. Mary said “If you were there, Lazarus would not have died”. The Centurion had a higher opinion of Jesus. He reasoned that Jesus did not need to be physically present to perform a miracle. This is a very important acknowledgement. Many beseech healers to come to their place to receive healing and when the healing is received, all glory go to that healer.  Jesus did not need to examine what kind of sickness that was to heal. He just spoke and it happened. This way of doing miracles through spoken Words can be observed at multiple instances in the Gospel.

He spoke and the demon possessed were healed by His Words

People were amazed at his teachings. Jesus just ordered and evil spirits came out of demon possessed.

The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite unlike the teachers of religious lawJesus cut him short. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him.Amazement gripped the audience, and they began to discuss what had happened. “What sort of new teaching is this?” they asked excitedly. “It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!” Mark 1:22-27

How could it be so obvious for a Roman Officer that Jesus had such an authority but absurd to the religious leaders?

He spoke and the rough waters became still by His Words

When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!” Mark 4:39

Jesus has authority on the whole world. The World was created by Him. When God said “Let there be Light”, it just happened. (Gen 1:3)

The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born. He assigned the sea its boundaries and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs. Let the whole world fear the Lord, and let everyone stand in awe of him. For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at his command.” Ps. 33:6-9

He spoke and hearts were changed by His Words

After the resurrection of Jesus, 2 of His followers were heading towards Emmaus and met with Jesus without realizing it. Jesus explained them through the scripture who the Messiah was and they said:

They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”Luke 24:32

Jesus’ doctrines had such authority that He permitted Himself to place His teachings above that of Moses and Jewish traditions. He did not come to abolish the law He said, but to accomplish it.

You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment!… But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. ” Mat. 5:28

I guess the Pharisees thought “How dare He replace the long established law and traditions by His own authority?”

The temple guards who went to arrest Jesus said: “We have never heard anyone speak like this!” the guards responded.” Jn. 7:46

The Word of God is living and active(Hebrews 4:12). It does not return to God without effect.

It is the same with my word.I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.” Is. 55:11

By His Word He will judge the wicked and fight the nations.

He will give justice to the poor and make fair decisions for the exploited. The earth will shake at the force of his word, and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked.” Isaiah 11:4, Revelation 2:16
