Jesus, the divine appointed Advocate[1]   Leave a comment

The evil Accuser and the Divine Advocate

The evil Accuser and the Divine Advocate

Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens,“It has come at last salvation and power
and the Kingdom of our God,and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth the one who accuses them before our God day and night.” Rev. 12:10

  • Satan the Accuser

Throughout the Gospel, the Pharisees accused the Holy One of heaven of sin and blasphemy. It is part of the devil’s character to accuse, this is why he is called the Accuser. If the devil had the guts to accuse the Holy One of heaven of sin or the highest spiritual leader on earth, Joshua, how then are we going to escape?

Then the angel showed me Jeshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord. The Accuser, Satan, was there at the angel’s right hand, making accusations against Jeshua. And the Lord said to Satan, “I, the Lord, reject your accusations, Satan. Yes, the Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebukes you. This man is like a burning stick that has been snatched from the fire.”Jeshua’s clothing was filthy as he stood there before the angel. So the angel said to the others standing there, “Take off his filthy clothes.” And turning to Jeshua he said, “See, I have taken away your sins, and now I am giving you these fine new clothes.” Zechariah 3:1-3
Satan shows no mercy, the same one who tempts and entices us to sin will be the same one who will accuse us of our sins. The one who makes people feel guilty of their past sins and worthlessness is Satan. The one who brings assurance of forgiveness of sin, promises a future and renders dignity is Jesus. The one who says it is all over, brings death and leads people to feel continuously shameful of their past is Satan. The one who makes everything new (2 Cor. 5:17), brings life (John 4:14) and lifts our head is Jesus(Ps 3:3).

  • Jesus the only and Perfect Advocate

It was prophesied (Isaiah 53:12) that Jesus would be interceding for the guilty people. Jesus has this ministry of reconciliation(2 Cor. 5:18) to remove the hostility between the righteous God and sinful man. We sin daily and there’re therefore many charges that the devil will bring against us. No one will be witty enough to defend us. The devil  restlessly accuses Christians before God’s throne. If someone is not in Christ, the devil’s accusations is not even needed for that person to be condemned. Jesus himself said (John 3:18) that those who do not believe in him are already condemned. On judgement day they will be rebuked for their unbelief.

Jesus is the Perfect and only Advocate who will be able to defend us.

My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.” 1 John 2:1-2

Only Jesus can say ‘I, the Lord, rejects your accusations, Satan’

Jesus is our Divine High Priest who intercedes day and night for us in God’s tabernacle whilst the devil relentlessly works towards our fall.

But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf. He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven” Hebrews 7:24-26

Satan is a fierce enemy that many people ignore. However, Jesus knows all the plans that the devil plots against us. Simon Peter, the one who denied thrice Jesus, was in the devil’s target and would have lost faith if Jesus did not intercede for him. Satan wanted to sift Simon and all the disciples like wheat.

Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:31

  • Jesus the only Advocate who knows perfectly well the text of the law

The law gives sin its power (1 Cor 15:56) and reveals sin (Romans 7). This is what the devil will use to excite God’s justice against us. “God did not you say that that stealing, adultery and lying are sins. Look at what your disciples did!”How then are we going to escape the devil’s accusations if we sin?

The devil knows the scripture and we do not ignore his schemes. Did not Satan twist the scripture to tempt Jesus in the wilderness? Jesus responded to these accusations from the scripture itself.
